Google NotebookLM
Overview
NotebookLM is a Google AI research and note-taking tool designed to help faculty work more effectively with their own materials. Unlike general-purpose AI tools, NotebookLM grounds all responses strictly in the documents you upload, such as PDFs, Google Docs, slide decks, articles, or notes.
NotebookLM functions as a reading, research, and sense-making assistant that can also transform source materials into structured guides, discussions, or audio overviews.
While the underlying AI model was trained on broad data, NotebookLM does not browse the internet or pull in new web information when responding. Its answers are grounded only in the documents you upload.

How NotebookLM Uses Data at VCU
NotebookLM runs within VCU’s Google Workspace account and only uses the documents you upload. Take a look at Google Workspace for Education to learn more.
When using NotebookLM:
- The AI does not browse the internet or pull in new information from the web while responding
- Responses are grounded in the specific documents you provide
- The tool can cite or reference where information appears within your uploaded sources
Faculty remain responsible for exercising discretion and should avoid uploading personal, sensitive, or confidential information that is not appropriate for instructional tools.
What NotebookLM Does Well
NotebookLM is particularly effective when working with long-form or complex source materials.
- Summarizing documents
Quickly generate summaries of articles, reports, syllabi, or readings. - Answering questions from source materials
Ask questions about uploaded documents and receive responses grounded in the text. - Comparing and synthesizing sources
Identify themes, patterns, or differences across multiple readings or files. - Supporting teaching preparation
Create study guides, discussion prompts, lecture outlines, timelines, visual summaries, or audio overviews based on assigned materials. - Reducing cognitive load
Assist with understanding dense or technical content without replacing close reading.
Additional Features
NotebookLM includes several features that extend beyond summarization and question-answering:
Audio Overviews
Generate a podcast-style audio discussion of your uploaded sources. This can be useful for reviewing content in a different format or modeling conversational analysis of materials. Take a look at the audio overview guide to learn more.
Visual Summaries and Structured Outputs
Create structured study guides, outlines, timelines, FAQs, or infographic-style summaries based on your documents.
Idea Generation and Framing
Develop discussion questions, thematic breakdowns, or conceptual frameworks grounded in your sources.
These features remain grounded in your uploaded materials and include source-linked citations.
Source-Linked Responses and Citations
NotebookLM includes inline citations that link directly to the exact passages in your uploaded sources. Clicking a citation opens the original document and highlights the referenced text, making it easy to verify accuracy and return to context. This feature is especially valuable for academic work where transparency and traceability matter.
