TidyUP

Overview:

TidyUP is a course cleanup tool that helps faculty quickly identify and remove unused, duplicate, unpublished, and outdated content in Canvas. By clearing clutter first, you can focus your effort on the materials students actually use. This quick start guide gives you the essentials to get up and running with TidyUP.

Enable TidyUP in Your Course

Make Course Cleanup Easy

TidyUP streamlines the process of finding and removing clutter in your Canvas course. With just a few clicks, you can:

  • Scan Your Course: TidyUP scans files, folders, and Canvas content—such as pages, assignments, discussions, and quizzes—to surface items that are unused, unpublished, duplicate, outdated, or in empty folders.
  • Review Results: Filter your results to focus on Unused items, Unpublished items, or Empty folders so you know exactly what can be removed safely.
  • See Where Files Are Used: View where a file is linked in your course before deciding to keep or delete it.
  • Clean Up Directly: Remove unnecessary files and content right from TidyUP—no need to leave Canvas.
  • Track Progress: Each scan shows counts (e.g., total files, unused files, total folders, empty folders, total content, unused content) so you can see the impact of your cleanup over time.

Key Features

  • Course-Wide Visibility: Get a comprehensive view of all course files, folders, and Canvas content in one place.
  • Smart Filters: Identify unpublished, unused, duplicate, and empty items quickly.
  • Link Usage Mapping: Check where files are linked so you don’t accidentally delete something still in use.
  • Works Across Content Types: Review files alongside pages, assignments, discussions, and quizzes.
  • Instructor-Only Access: TidyUP is available to instructors and designers; students do not see this tool.

Tips for Using TidyUP Effectively

  • Run TidyUP early—before students access your course—and after big updates or course copies.
  • Start with the Unused and Empty filters for quick wins, then review Unpublished items.
  • Verify link usage before deleting. If you’re unsure about an item, download or move it to a safe folder first.
  • Be cautious with content referenced by question banks or external tools; confirm it’s truly unused before removal.
  • Pair TidyUP with your accessibility workflow, including UDOIT,  to avoid fixing content you plan to delete.
